Strategic Sports S-482 RMR Youth eBike Helmet Wins 2027 German Design Award

A Second German Design Award for Strategic Sports' RMR Platform

Strategic Sports' uniquely sustainable removable, modular, recyclable RMR helmet platform has earned another major international design honor. The S-482 RMR Youth eBike Helmet has been named a Winner of the 2027 German Design Award in the category "Excellent Product Design – Sports, Outdoor Activities and Leisure."

The recognition marks the second German Design Award for an RMR model, following the S-427' urban helmet’s win in 2024. It is also the second major award for the S-482, which earned a Gold Award at the 2026 Taipei Cycle d&i Award earlier this year.

Initiated in 2012 by the German Design Council originally founded in 1953, the German Design Awards honor outstanding work across product design, communication design and architecture. An international jury evaluates entries on criteria that include design quality, overall concept, function, context and sustainability, with growing attention to circular design. As a 2027 winner, the S-482 joins a field that includes globally recognized brands such as Audi, Seiko and Helly Hansen.

"At Strategic, we design product innovation around the evolving needs of riders," says Sherry Tai, Global Director of Sales at Strategic Sports. "More young riders are on eBikes, and they're riding at higher speeds. Combining youth eBike certification with a real sustainability story just makes sense, for riders and their parents, our partners, and the planet.”

The S-482 is built around Strategic Sports' RMR system: removable, modular, recyclable. This adhesive-free helmet architecture replaces permanently bonded construction with a snap-fit modular system, so materials can be cleanly separated at the end of the helmet's life. The S-482 is manufactured from recycled and recyclable materials including rABS, rEPS and rPET. It transforms a helmet from landfill material at end-of-life to part of the circular economy. Even the visibility-boosting  integrated, rechargeable LED light can be removed and properly recycled.

"Function always comes first," says Alan Okamura, the Strategic Sports designer behind the S-482. "And then adding to the protection, fit and modular construction story, we wanted a clean, modern shape that looks right on little riders."

The S-482 extends an RMR platform that has now been recognized across a growing list of international design and innovation awards. The S-427 won both the 2024 German Design Award and the Australian Good Design Award. The S-460 earned the 2024 Red Dot Design Concept Award, the 2025 Red Dot Design Award and a 2025 ISPO Award. The S-482 now holds both the 2026 Taipei Cycle d&i Gold Award and a 2027 German Design Award.

While the S-460 established RMR in the urban cycling category, the S-482 applies the same architecture to youth eBike riding. The helmet is eBike-certified and features a removable, rechargeable LED rear light to improve visibility in low-light conditions. Safety performance comes from a combination of proven EPS construction and Strategic Sports' proprietary ERT™ energy-management system, a low-density polymer layer engineered to reduce linear and rotational energy in common real-world impact scenarios and validated through independent laboratory testing.

"Kids grow fast, and so does the eBike market," Tai says. "Our customers want helmets that keep up with both, and RMR gives them a platform they can build on."

With a second German Design Award for RMR, Strategic Sports continues to bring safety engineering and circular design together in one of cycling's fastest-growing segments, with young riders at the center of that work.
