BBB’s Version of the Strategic S-460 RMR Helmet Earns an ISPO Award

Strategic Sports’ fully recyclable S-460 RMR platform has earned another major distinction. The 2025 ISPO Award recognizes BBB Cycling’s BackStreet LED ERT, their version of the S-460, built on the same recycled and recyclable materials system and glue-free modular construction that first received the  Red Dot Design Concept Award in 2024 followed by a Red Dot Design Award  in 2025. 

The BackStreet LED ERT carries forward the core RMR principles that define the S-460. Its adhesive-free modular architecture allows every component to be separated cleanly at end of life, without any special tools, and routed into the correct recycling stream. Unlike conventional helmets that permanently bond shell, foam, and hardware, this approach preserves the material purity of rABS, rEPS, and rPET, supporting a complete circular pathway.

As Strategic Sports completed the first RMR designs, the team realized there was more potential to explore. An integrated, rechargeable, and, true to the RMR philosophy, removable and separately recyclable LED light would complete the story and this was added to the S-460.

For years, Strategic has worked closely with BBB Cycling, a brand deeply rooted in European cycling culture and known for its commitment to sustainability and smart urban mobility. That long-standing relationship made BBB the natural partner for bringing this concept to riders.

“The BBB team immediately saw the potential of the S-460 and the RMR story, and adding it to their line was an easy decision,” said Strategic Sports Managing Director Norman Cheng. “From there, we worked together to develop their version—the Backstreet LED ERT—and collaborated on the ISPO Award submission.”

The result was a partnership that combined BBB’s consumer reach and urban design expertise with Strategic’s material and manufacturing innovation. “Seeing RMR technology repeatedly recognized shows how meaningful sustainable design can be when executed the right way,” Cheng said. “BBB Cycling has applied that same mindset: fully recyclable materials, a clean modular structure, and proven ERT energy management make this helmet perfectly aligned with the future of city mobility.”

And with that collaboration, the BBB Backstreet LED ERT not only earned an ISPO Award—it demonstrated how innovation, sustainability, and shared vision can elevate everyday cycling.

The BackStreet LED ERT builds on the RMR platform with features designed for year-round commuting, including a removable and rechargeable LED module for low-light visibility and an optional ear protector kit for warmth and added protection for urban crashes. At the core of its safety system is ERT™, the Strategic-patented low-density layer engineered to manage rotational and low-speed linear energy, validated through independent laboratory testing and itself recyclable.

For commuters and e-bike riders, the BackStreet LED ERT delivers ventilation, comfort, visibility, and responsibly sourced materials in a single package. Its modular construction supports straightforward part replacement, extending functional life and reducing the likelihood of landfill disposal.

The ISPO Award jury noted that the BackStreet LED ERT offers a mature and actionable interpretation of circular design. Combined with the proven RMR platform and ERT impact technology, the helmet illustrates how sustainability and performance can advance together across Strategic’s partner brands.

The BackStreet LED ERT now joins the S-460 in a growing family of globally recognized helmets built on Strategic Sports’ RMR platform and celebrated for sustainable design and responsible manufacturing. This expanding group also includes the S-427, which uses the same RMR materials and construction and has earned multiple honors of its own, including the Australian Good Design Award and a German Design Award
