Love at the Water Park: Inside Strategic Sports' 520 Event

At Strategic Sports, we build products that protect people who move fast and live boldly. This spring, we turned that care inward. Across our China and Vietnam sites, we held our first company-wide 520 dating event, built to spark connection and maybe a little romance. In Mandarin, "520" sounds like "I love you," an unofficial day of affection, and an invitation for single employees to meet colleagues and see what happens.

Nine Couples. Two countries. One idea.

The response exceeded our expectations. Three couples paired up in China and six in Vietnam, nine new relationships sparked by an afternoon built to lower the pressure and raise the fun. The 520 tradition has Chinese roots, but our Vietnam team embraced it anyway and made it their own, a small win for Strategic Sports' global culture.

To give the new couples a proper first outing, we organized a special trip on June 27. China's couples spent the day at Chimelong Water Park in Guangzhou, while Vietnam celebrated the same day.

"I did not expect nine couples. It's not easy to find someone you really click with today. But give good people a chance to slow down and really talk, and wonderful things happen," said Managing Director Norman Cheng. "Happy people make strong teams, but it's more than that. This is our People First value: helping people find connection, and maybe happiness. Isn't that what life is all about?"

A Recipe for Success

The event leaned on light, low-stakes ways to connect: free dining, couple photos, and games. The numbers backed up the mood. In China, it earned a 78% positive rating, with 43% very satisfied and no one dissatisfied. More than half, 57%, would join again, 85% felt the gender balance was right, and 71% found the pacing smooth.

In their Words

One R&D employee called the day "well-organized from start to finish," with games that were "easy going and a great way to relax." A Finance colleague said the team-based water activities "brought everyone closer" and left her with "a real sense of happiness."

"We spend our days building products to protect people we will never meet. The least we can do is look after the people right next to us. When someone feels cared for, they stand a little taller," Cheng said.

Vietnam Makes It Their Own

If China set the template, Vietnam ran with it. Our Binh Phuoc team gathered its six couples on June 27 at Ula Glamping Resort, a scenic setting with its own water park and archery range. Satisfaction came back at 100%, and 92% said they would gladly join again. More telling was what the day did for people: two thirds, 67%, came away understanding each other more deeply, and a quarter took their relationship to the next level. Their favorites echoed China's, and above all, they said, the day strengthened team spirit. As the team put it, "every interaction is a step toward deeper connection."

What we learned, and what comes next

We ran this event to bring people together, and to learn. Employees wanted more low-pressure ice-breakers and fewer on-stage performances, more chances to mingle through rotating seats and mobile tea breaks, and a lighter framing that feels less like matchmaking. Further ahead, we plan to expand it, invest more in the experience, and make 520 an annual tradition.

"Next year I want more seats, more sites, more chances to connect. I want a new employee to hear about 520 and ask when the next one is. That is how a tradition begins," Cheng said.

A culture worth celebrating

Strategic Sports has always believed a strong team is our real advantage, and that culture is something we build on purpose. Nine couples and two countries later, we are proud of what our people created together, and we can't wait to do it again next year.

To the nine couples: congratulations. The rest of us are cheering you on!
